Our First 35 Years

Brothers Maurie and Tom Robinson grew up in the world of metal. In fact, their father, Al Robinson, founded Badger Sheet Metal in 1923. As Maurie and Tom reached adulthood, they became partners in their father’s company. In January 1975, seeing an opportunity to reach more industries, the brothers founded Robinson Metal and Roofing. The new venture meant expanded offerings in three distinct areas: sheet metal work, heating and air conditioning, and roofing. Maurie and Tom’s insight soon paid off. Throughout the 1980s, the company grew steadily.

Later that decade, Robinson Metal and Roofing’s executive workforce also expanded. The company’s family ties continued in 1987 when Tom’s son Todd joined as salesperson in the Heating and Cooling division. In 1989, Maurie and Tom turned to long-time employee Darrell LaCrosse to fill the role of General Manager.

The 1990s brought many big changes. In 1995, the roofing department was sold to its long-time foreman. But over the following three years, two new divisions were formed: one to assemble aluminum housings for local generator distributors and a machining division to offer customers expanded services on many projects. At the close of the decade, Maurie Robinson passed away and Tom Robinson decided to retire from an active role in the company. Subsequently the company was sold to Darrell LaCrosse and Todd Robinson. In 2000, under Darrell and Todd’s leadership, the company was renamed Robinson Metal, Inc. and relocated to a larger facility, allowing for increased capabilities.

Today, tomorrow, and beyond

We are proud to have 320 employees and five distinct divisions in order to execute and deliver a broad spectrum of projects in a quality and timely manner. Robinson Metal covers all facets of custom metal fabrication. Robinson Machine, an expanded service of the fabrication division, provides custom machined components to clients around the nation. Robinson Custom Enclosures fabricates sound attenuated enclosures, fuel tanks, trailers, and other components specific to the power generation industry. Robinson’s Heating and Cooling Division services and installs furnaces and air conditioning equipment to local residential and light commercial customers. Finally, our Pipe and Vessel division promotes ASME certified S, U, and R stamp projects.

Today, we not only look back with thanks for our good fortune during our first 35 years, but also forward with excitement for the progress the future holds. With our 175,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility and dedicated workforce, we’re certain Robinson Metal, Inc. has the means to prosper and deliver quality products for many years to come.
